How to Get Into Pittsburgh Improv

See a Show

The best way to get started is to go out and see some shows! Read the show descriptions, and pick one that strikes your fancy. Not only will you be entertained, you’ll also get a great opportunity to meet other actors and enthusiasts in the scene. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself! We’re a pretty friendly bunch.

Try a Jam

Already have experience? Ready to take the plunge for the first time? Improv jams let you get some stage time and also meet local performers. Some of the regular ones are.

Pittsburgh Improv Jam

One of the longest running jams, this is all long-form. Each evening has mix-em-up teams followed by a feature set of a local troupe. Sign-up starts at 9:30PM at Backstage Bar, which is the entry point for the CLO Cabaret theater where the jam takes place. Hosted by the Well Known Strangers!

Bonus Stage: Arcade Improv Night

See great Arcade Comedy Theater improv troupes take the stage for a fun-filled night of unforgettable comedy, and every month one evening hosts an open-to-anyone jam! Take the chance to play with performers and teachers from many of Arcade’s teams!
Tickets $7. BYOB

SCIT Improv Jam

After watching the Steel City Improv Theater’s house teams and teacher team play at 8PM, stick around for the jam! Sign up begins at 9:30PM, and jam begins shortly thereafter. It’s free and open to all to watch and/or participate. It is a great way to try out improv or sharpen your skills. And it just plain old fun!

Atomic Jam!

Atomic Jane hosts the monthly ATOMIC JAM, a ladies-only comedy jam with a showcase set from a featured guest!

Experience the unique support and energy that happen when performing with just the ladies. A stage full of women – that’s anyone indentifying as a woman – sharing their talents in improv, stand up, sketch, musical comedy, and storytelling!

Take a Class

Pittsburgh is extremely lucky to have three training centers available for learning improv. All of these theaters have curricula for getting introduced to improv as well as advanced studies. Also there are workshops that can focus on a particular skill, format, or technique and that often are lead by highly talented and/or nationally-recognized instructors.

I’d recommend taking a look at their websites and classes and see what clicks with you.
